Birthday Cake - The Mermaid's World : December 2007

1. The mermaid cake
This birthday cake was made for a little girl in Botswana, who wanted a mermaid for her 4th birthday. It was a challenge to meet the little angel's imaginations & expectations ! Well, I tried to be a little girl and think from her point of view and i could see the star-fish, colured sea-shells, rocks, reefs of different hue, marine plants, octopus and a lovely mermaid, sitting on a rock and resting her hand on it. A brave attempt to fulfil a girl's fantasy of the little mermaid in her world, using fondant and marzipan.

Thanks for leaving such lovely comments. Yes, its part of life to be a working mom, study to bulid a solid fundamentals of life but also find time to involve in a an artwork..believe me, it takes away all the stress. The cakes..the base, the rocks etc. were mediera cake - the popular portuguese traditional type of english cake.

Thanks for your comment. You know, recently grandson of great sarod exponent had come to Botswana under aegis of ICCR. I had asked him,'from whom have your learnt such beautiful rendition'.He said'i am still learning'. Then i had to ask 'since when did you start learning ?' I think we continue to learn throughout our life. I am still a beginner, dear. And my life long pursuit is of perfect cake.
Thank you for your words of encouragement and appreciation. I will continue to try harder.

  25. Very pretty!!!
Is that a barbie in mermaid icing or did u make the doll too?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dear Spice lover
The barbie is covered with icing. I have not yet tried on modelling of human figures. I bought a barbie doll, removed its attire and then covered it with icing of exact colour by making the scales and her tail.
I am happy that you liked it.

  33. Dear Anthony
Thanks for the comments. You know, I also thought that I lack the artistic skills but when i read the books, such as The International School of Sugarcraft, Vol. 1,2 & 3 and other sugarcraft related books and slowly started practising its content, i realised that, more than being artistic, its the techniques and the processes involved in sugarcraft. Let your imagination play around and you will realise its more of a technique and you will certainly enjoy it.

And Viola! your journey will begin.Sugarcraft is a process, creativity will follow, once you are adapt in techniques.I have started like that.I will tell you, whatever i know, if it helps.
